Hangman is the word game we all played on a piece of paper: a hidden word, a few dashes and a figure that is drawn piece by piece with every mistake. You guess letters, open up the word and try to find it before it is too late.

At STEKIUS hangman is played online for free, for one player, in twelve different scenes, with a figure that hangs with real weight and sways in the air. Every word you find gives you chips and the next one comes at once. Below you will find all the rules.

The hidden word

Every round starts with a hidden word in the language of the page. You see how many letters it has, and some of them are already open to help you get started.

The words are real words of the language you have chosen, so if you change the language of the site, the hangman words change too.

How you guess

You choose a letter from the on-screen keyboard or type it on your own keyboard. If the letter is in the word, it opens everywhere it appears. If it is not, a piece of the figure is drawn.

You have one minute for each letter. If the time runs out without a choice, it counts as a mistake, so do not leave the game halfway.

Mistakes and the figure

With six mistakes the figure is complete and hanged. Then the word is lost, and with it the game ends. That is why every mistake counts, and it is worth thinking before you tap a letter.

The figure is not a simple drawing: it hangs with real weight, the wind sways it, and you can grab it with the mouse or your finger and swing it.

Twelve scenes

Hangman is played in twelve different scenes, so that every game has its own atmosphere. The rules stay the same in all of them; only what you see around the word changes.

Word after word

Every word you find pays virtual chips at once and the next one comes. The game goes on like this, word after word, until the figure is hanged or the maximum game time has passed. The more words you find, the more chips you collect.

On a phone and a computer

On a phone you choose letters from the on-screen keyboard with your finger. On a computer you can tap them with the mouse or simply type them on your keyboard, which is the quickest way when time is short.

Vocabulary practice

Hangman is one of the best games for practising your vocabulary. Every word makes you think about which letters are most common, which endings fit and which words have that length. Because the words come in the language of the page, you can also play it to practise a foreign language: you change the language of the site and the words change with it.

Chips and leaving

The chips are virtual, shared by all the games of the site, and have no money value. If you leave in the first minutes of the game, you pay a leave penalty. After that, leaving is free and you keep what you won. Words give chips up to a limit each day; after that you can keep playing for free, and the chips start again the next day.

Tips

Start with the vowels: they appear in almost every word.
Then try the most common consonants of the language.
Look at the letters that are already open: they often show the ending of the word.
Do not rush, but do not forget that every letter has a time limit.
